Killdeer are the largest of the ringed plovers. They are especially slender and lanky, with a long, pointed tail and long wings. Unlike other shore birds who tend to inhabit areas with water, Killdeer can be found on open ground with low vegetation (or no vegetation at all), including lawns, golf courses, driveways, parking lots, pastures, fields, sandbars and mudflats.
Fun fact: If a predator or threat approaches its nest, a killdeer adult will perform a “broken-wing” act by dragging one of its wings as it walks away from the nest or young. The tactic often causes intruders to think the bird is struggling so they turn their attention to the adult instead.
