The Oracle House was originally built in 1702 and is one of the oldest homes in New England. It was built by the Honorable Richard Wibird who was an officer in the British Royal Navy, a wealthy merchant, a member of The King's Council, and a benefactor of Harvard College.  This historic home was originally located behind the North Meetinghouse on Market Square and has been moved at least two times. It was moved from that location c1800 to Haymarket Square and again in 1937 to its present location on Marcy Street where it faces Prescott Park. The house was given its name after the newspaper "Portsmouth Oracle" which began publication in 1973 in the building when it was near Market Square.

This past spring my mother and I stumbled upon the Oracle House while strolling along Prescott Park. I have walked by this house countless times over the years, but it never really caught my eye until I saw its salmon-colored exterior bathed in the bright sunlight of that day. The exterior was practically glowing, making it even more stunning.
