North Church, Portsmouth New Hampshire Print
from $24.00
North Church first began as a log cabin in 1641 in Portsmouth, NH. The current church located in Market Square in the heart of the downtown area was built in 1855. A popular and eye-catching landmark, the church can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Notable worshippers over the years include Daniel Webster, John Paul Jones, and George Washington.
I’ve never been inside North Church, but the landmark has been a constant presence during many fun Portsmouth memories for me during my high school/college years and into adulthood. The many restaurants I used to meet friends at have come and gone over the years (as have countless businesses), but the church remains there, steadfast and watching over the city for more than 150 years. Think of how many changes it has seen in that time!
The most notable memory I have specific to the church itself was back in July of 2006 when I was working in downtown Portsmouth. The church’s steeple was getting replaced that summer and a sudden and severe thunderstorm ripped through Market Square, the wind or lightning causing the steeple and its scaffolding to topple onto cars below. Thankfully, nobody was injured, but it was terrifying!
