Great Wass Island, Beals Maine Print

My husband and I set off from the trailhead at Great Wass Island, greeted by a cool summer fog. I didn’t quite know what to expect on this adventure, but the hike blew my mind away and is perhaps one of my most favorites that I’ve ever done (and I’ve hiked quite a bit). The trail was rather unassuming as it started out, but once it opened onto Maine’s rugged coastline, it was amazing. Being July, the wildflowers were in full bloom including irises marsh felwort, and carnivorous pitcher plants, the latter of which we’d never seen before. My favorite part of the hike was scrambling across the rocks all the way out to the forested point seen here in my artwork. As the fog began to lift, we spotted a seal bobbing near the rocks. We sat at that point overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and breathing in the salty air as we enjoyed a leisurely lunch. The tide was unusually low that day and the water appeared more like a lake than the sea, with no waves to speak of. This is one of my most favorite memories and one I’ll cherish for years to come.
