A dinghy, pronounced "DING-ee," is a rowboat used for fishing or used as a lifeboat on a larger ship. They’re usually either rowed with oars or powered by a low-horsepower outboard motor. The smaller size makes them easy to maneuver between larger boats and can be easily managed by one person. Dinghies come in many shapes and colors and can be made from wood or fiberglass.
Living on the coast of Maine, these small boats are a common sight for me. I’ve always enjoyed watching the hustle and bustle around coastal areas where seasoned lobstermen and sailors make their living from the ocean. It’s not an easy life, but I admire anyone who’s tough enough to do it, especially in the winter! The dinghies portrayed here are docked at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Maine where they’re used to access lobster and sailboats that are moored within the Cove. These caught my eye, particularly the negative space between the boats as well as the reflections in the water.
