Squirrel Point Light: A Kennebec River Gem
Located on Arrowsic Island, Squirrel Point Light has watched over a challenging bend of the Kennebec River since 1895. It is one of four navigational aids along the 11-mile stretch between the Atlantic Ocean and the City of Bath, a section of river shaped by strong currents, shifting tides, and generations of maritime travel.
The lighthouse also comes with a fitting bit of history. In 1717, Massachusetts Governor Samuel Shute’s frigate, The Squirrel, ran aground near the site of the present-day lighthouse, giving Squirrel Point its name.
